We also have a hand knitted blanket that my husband's great-grandmother stitched just for him. I treasure these and keep them packed away for special occasions.
Although I can't knit or sew, I like to make as much from scratch as possible. It gives me a sense of accomplishment. This is indeed a food blog, but every once in a while I'm going to throw something in that isn't necessarily edible, but is most definitely handmade.
This is our dog, Stray.
She's the most gentle canine you will ever meet. Stray spends most of her day getting pummeled by these three little hoodlums. Still, she never mutters a growl of disgust or ever snaps out in anger. She will groan complaints from time to time, but I guess that's to be expected.
Today I decided that she deserved a treat for her tolerance of horseback rides and ear tugs. I came up with a Doggie Treat recipe and she wholeheartedly approves. I've never tried to create anything for our furry friend, but this recipe turned out to be a success!!
Canine Cookies
*1.5 C. flour (I used Whole Wheat)
*1/2 C. cornmeal
*1/4 C. oil (I used vegetable)
* 3 eggs
* 1 C. pork stock**
- preheat the oven to 350° F.
- Whisk the eggs, oil and pork stock in a mixing oil until blended.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until moistened.
- Line a 9x13 baking dish with Silpat, or parchment paper.
- Spread the batter into the baking dish. The batter will be thick and sticky. Use a palette knife to spread to 1/4 in. thickness. You won't use the entire space of the baking dish, and it doesn't have to be perfect.
- Bake cookies for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool SLIGHTLY. Using a cookie cutter, pizza cutter, or knife, CAREFULLY cut cookies into desired shapes and then remove shapes from dish.
- Reset oven to 400° F
- Place cookies on a broiling rack and bake for 10-12 additional minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.***
**I used a homemade stock from a previous recipe. You can find that recipe here!
*** If you don't have a broiling rack, you can always use the same baking dish. Just remove the scraps and you're good to go!
